Effect of Alcohols on the CMC and Thermodynamic Functions of Anionic Surfactants in DMF/Long‐Chain Alcohol Using Microcalorimetric Method

The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of two kinds of anionic surfactant (including sodium laurate (SLA) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)) in mixed alcohol and N, N‐dimethyl formamide solvent (DMF) were investigated through measuring power‐time curves by titration microcalorimetry. From data of the lowest point and the area of the power‐time curves, their CMC and ΔH _m ⁰ can be obtained. According to standard thermodynamic equations, ΔG _m ⁰ and ΔS _m ⁰ also can be calculated. For different surfactant, the influences of the carbon number and the concentration of alcohol on the CMC and standard thermodynamic functions are different in DMF polar medium. These thermodynamic functions for micelle formation can be further interpreted.     

Simultaneous determination of seven lignans in Justicia procumbens by high performance liquid chromatography–photodiode array detection using relative response factors

A simple and sensitive HPLC coupled with photodiode array (HPLC–PDA) method was developed for simultaneous determination of seven lignans in Justicia procumbens using relative response factors (RRFs). The chromatographic separation was performed on a Shiseido Capcell Pak C₁₈ column (250 × 4.6 mm id, 5 μm), a gradient elution of acetonitrile/water, and a photodiode array detector. The column temperature was maintained at 35°C and the detection wavelength was set at 256 nm. Chinensinaphthol methyl ether was selected as the reference compound for calculating the relative response factors of the lignans. It has shown that the RRFs for lignans are quite similar at 256 nm of detection under different analytical conditions (different columns and HPLC instruments). Using RRFs, not every lignan is needed as a reference standard, making the method ideal for rapid, routine analysis, especially for those laboratories where lignans standards are not readily available. An economic and practicable HPLC method using RRFs was established for the determination of seven lignans in J. procumbens. This method not only can determine multiple indexes in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) simultaneously, but also resolve the problem of lacking of chemical standards. It will be a good quality evaluation method and pattern for TCMs.     

An Improved Method for the Regioselective Oxidation of Stannylene Acetals and Dimerization of the α-Hydroxyketone Products

Abstract

Dibutylstannylene acetals, particularly those derived from terminal diols, were found to be oxidized regiospeeifically to α-hydroxyketones in good to excellent yield by N-bromosuccinimide. One of the products, 3-deoxy-l,2-O-isopropylidene-α-D-erythro hexofuranos-5-ulose (8), exists to about 20% in solution as a mixture of dimers. One of the dimers can be obtained as a solid and its structure was determined tentatively by a combination of NMR experiments and MM3 molecular mechanics calculations.     

A novel and simple pathway to synthesis of porous polyurea absorbent and its tests on dye adsorption and desorption

A novel one-step protocol for the preparation of porous polyurea material (PPU) through precipitation polymerization of toluene diisocynate (TDI) is presented. The process is based on step polymerization of one singlemonomer, TDI, with water in water-acetonemixed solvent. PPU is obtained without need for any porogen or additives, and no any chemical modification on the outcome polymer is necessary. The morphology, pore size and size distribution of PPU are characterized by scanning electron microscope and BET nitrogen adsorption. Taking acid fuchsine (AF) and Congo Red as dye examples in wastewaters, their adsorption on, desorption from PPU and the reusability of PPU were tested. Experimental conditions for AF adsorption were optimized with regard to pH, adsorption time, AF concentration and amount of PPU. Results demonstrate that the as-prepared PPU is of high performance in dyes adsorption and recycled use. This work presents therefore a novel and attractive candidate for removal of anionic dyes from wastewaters.     

A bird nest-like manganese dioxide and its application as electrode in supercapacitors

A novel bird nest-like nanostructured MnO2(BNNS-MnO2) was prepared by a facile and cost-effective strategy. Their structures and morphologies were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Capacitive behaviors were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge. The obtained nano-MnO2 possesses a well designed loose-assembled hierarchical nanoarchitecture with an appropriate crystallinity which gives rise to excellent performances as an electrode material for supercapacitors. A maximum specific capacitance of 917 F/g has been obtained at a current density of 5 mA/cm2 in 6 mol/L KOH aqueous solution, and a specific capacitance of 210 F/g has been maintained for 500 cycles. As the low cost of MnSO4 and KCr2O7 and the low reaction temperature, the present method avoids the requirements for complicated operations, time/energy-consuming and expensive reagents, and perhaps is ready for the industrialization of nano-MnO2 production.     

The Regio- and Stereoselective Synthesis of Rhamnose-Containing Oligosaccharides Via Sugar-Sugar Orthoester Formation and Rearrangement

Convenient regio- and stereoselective syntheses of rhamnose-containing oligosaccharides via sugar-sugar orthoester formation and rearrangement are described. 1→3 Linked rhamno di- and trisaccharides were synthesized effectively using unprotected rhamnose residue as the glycosyl acceptor by this methodology.     

Facile Synthesis of Polysubstituted Cyclopropanes in a Two-Phase Solid-Liquid System

The Michael addition of α-chloro esters to α,β-unsaturated systems was catalyzed by phase transfer catalyst, and the some polysubstituted cyclopropanes were facilly synthesized.     

General admissibility for linear estimators in a general multivariate linear model under balanced loss function

A generalization of Zellner’s balanced loss function is proposed. General admissibility in a general multivariate linear model is investigated under the generalized balanced loss function. And the sufficient and necessary conditions for linear estimators to be generally admissible in classes of homogeneous and nonhomogeneous linear estimators are given, respectively.     

Visible light-induced hydroxyalkylation of 2H-benzothiazoles with alcohols via selectfluor oxidation

A visible-light induced metal-free approach was described for the hydroxyalkylation of 2H-benzothiazoles with alcohols by using selectfluor as the oxidant. A variety of 2H-benzothiazoles and alcohols could be tolerated, providing a mild and simple method for the synthesis of C2-hydroxyalkylated 2H-benzothiazoles in moderate to good yields. Besides, ethers were also compatible in this reaction, leading to corresponding C2 ether-substituted 2H-benzothiazoles with high regioselectivity.
